An experimental investigation of microwave imaging using preformed beams is made at a frequency of 24 gigahertz. The apparatus consists of a 1.5 meter diameter parabolic reflector with a mosaic of detectors at the focal plane. The detector outputs are amplified and stored to provide a set of d.c. voltages, proportional to the energy received at points in the image plane, to be applied to an intensity modulated display. Using microwave antenna and optical principles, the theory of image formation and resolution is discussed. The range capability is predicted by the radar range equation, using measured parameters. Advantages of the system, with respect to conventional scanning radar appear for fast moving objects at close range
