A two-level numerical prediction model incorporating terrain and non-adiabatic warming effects is tested. An attempt is made to determine the empirical coef ficient (s) for each of three terms composing a prognostic equation designed to predict the 1000 to 500-mb thickness through the use of a digital computer. The model is applied to three cases in April for a large part of the Northern Hemisphere. The predicted positions of most of the pressure systems were reasonablyaccurate; however the model tends to over-develop pressure centers. The effects of terrain and non-adiabatic warming were in accord with theoretical expectations; however, the excessive development dominated the numerical verification so that no significant improvement resulted from the inclusion of these refinements.
