An investigation of the equations of motion method for the evaluation of the longitudinal dynamic stability derivatives of the F-80A from transient response data

Transient resonse data obtained from the flight tests of an F-90A airplane were analyzed for the longitudinal stability derivatives by the Equations of Motions Method in order to determine whether or not the method is practicable. Other considerations include the possibility of determining the moment of inertia of the aircraft from transient response data and a relative evaluation of the type of input that should be used to obtain the transient data. All data considered were obtained at a constant center of gravity position and essentially the same altitude and Mach Number. The method is considered to be a practical means of obtaining the longitudinal stabillity derivatives of an airplane provided certain precautions are observed. The accuracy of the moment of inertia determination is somewhat less than that obtainable from ground tests. In general the step function data yielded better results than the impulse data. The values of the stability derivatives and the inertia parameter, h, are as follows.
