Executable behavioral modeling of system- and software-architecture specifications to inform resourcing decisions

Farah-Stapleton, Monica F. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2016-09)
The size, cost, and slow rate of change of Department of Defense (DOD) Information Technology (IT) systems make introducing new capabilities challenging. Without considering the whole system and its environment, design ...

Identifying and quantifying emergent behavior through system of systems modeling and simulation

Cummings, Mary Ann (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2015-09)
The U.S. Department of Defense builds many weapons systems as Systems of Systems (SoSs). Operational testing is used to test capabilities in these SoSs, but testing all configurations of the SoSs may not be possible due ...

Safety of mixed model access control in a multilevel system

Arvay, Randall J. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2014-06)
Information sharing can result in emergent behaviors that affect the safety properties associated with overt information flows. Secure cross-domain integration, involving the safety properties of both individual domains ...

A systematic software, firmware, and hardware codesign methodology for digital signal processing

Chang, Daniel Y. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2014-03)
Creating an embedded system that meets its functional, performance, cost, and schedule goals is a software-and-hardware codesign problem, since the design of the software and hardware components influence each other. The ...

Use of Statechart Assertions for Modeling Human-in-the-Loop Security Analysis and Decision-Making Processes

Schumann, Michael A. (Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2012-06)
Processes are a fundamental component of most activities undertaken by humans. In software engineering and information assurance, in particular, it is important that processes be understandable, documented, and repeatable ...

Software system architecture modeling methodology for naval gun weapon systems

Rivera, Joey (Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2010-12)
This dissertation describes the development of an architectural modeling methodology that supports the Navy's requirement to evaluate potential changes to gun weapon systems in order to identify potential software safety ...

Application of Real Options theory to software engineering for strategic decision making in software related capital investments

Olagbemiro, Albert O. (Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2008., 2008-12)
As it stands today, software is the major expense in software intensive systems. Therefore, software is, and should be treated as a capital investment and an approach emphasizing a strategic investment methodology in its ...

An engineering context for software engineering

Riehle, Richard D. (Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2008-09)
New engineering disciplines are emerging in the late Twentieth and early Twenty-first Century. One such emerging discipline is software engineering. The engineering community at large has long harbored a sense of skepticism ...

A merit-based architecture for the automatic selection and composition of services in soa-based C4ISR systems

Cook, Thomas S. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2008., 2008-06)
Department of Defense (DoD) Command and Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems are responsible for supplying the right information at the right time to the ...

Data strategies to support automated multi-sensor data fusion in a service oriented architecture

Rothenhaus, Kurt Joseph. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2008., 2008-06)
The quantity of data available to decision makers of various types is rapidly expanding beyond the pace of manual interpretation techniques (Hobbins, 1). Introducing a Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) based web service ...
