The effect of a sixty million electron volt beam, produced by a linear accelerator and focused on standard explosives varying in weight from three to twenty-five milligrams, has been studied. Doses in the range from 1 x 10(9) rads to 3.2 x 10(10) rads completely desensitized lead azide but had no effect on the explosive behavior of lead styphnate. The desensitization tests on explosives consisted of both heat and impact test methods.
