The information processing rate is an important indicant of how well a naval systems operator will perform a complex task. The complex task used for this experiment was a highly sophisticated psychomotor- testing instrument designed to provide sensitive, reliable measurement of response speed, accuracy and short term memory which incorporated four delay modes. Analysis of the data collected from twenty subjects showed that as the mental functions of the task became more complex, then more information was processed. The additional increase of information was not detected using simple information processing techniques. These results supported the previous findings of Van Gigch who initially approached the problem.
