Non-Roman font generation via interactive computer graphics

This study an examination of the characteristics of computer symbol manipulation systems, including the conventions governing conversion of input symbols to internal code and back to output symbols. Methods to achieve flexibility in the manipulation of large, non-standard, and non-Roman-character symbol sets are discussed, primarily by examination of word processing systems designed to operate on non-Roman fonts. The intent of this discussion is to highlight the desirability of moving toward a computer design approach that incorporates generalized symbol management capabilities. Leading-edge computer graphics workstations are then evaluated or their potential to host advanced font management systems resulting from this design approach. Finally, the BUILDFONT Font Creation and Editing System, a software utility implemented on the IRIS-2400 series Graphics Workstation, is presented as a tool to assist researchers to develop generalizes symbol management applications.
