This study presents a two-phase approach to the generation and maintenance
of a polygonal cartographic database to be used with autonomous vehicle route
planning. The database is non-interactively generated from available U.S.
Geological Survey topographical maps, and interactively maintained. The focus
of this research centers on the non-interactive generation of the polygonal
database through heuristic processing of digital images and subsequent region
growing.
