The increasing complexity of our every day jobs requires us to pursue flexible and more adaptive technologies with which to respond to our professional requirements. One such method is an expert system. This computer software "tool" is one means to augment and streamline ones professional decision making process. The expert system can be utilized as a means to assist new or inexperienced personnel to make informed decisions about their jobs. It can also assist in the decision making process when the technical expert is not present. Due to the fast paced, rapidly changing nature of computer software development, the need exists for a specific methodology to direct the development and acquisition of this technology within the Department of Defense (DoD). This study will provide an objective summary and analysis of specific contractual considerations that need to be addressed with regard to the acquisition of an expert system. A selected review of DoD and industry responses to personal interviews, conference presentations and published papers, served as the basis for discussion of the problems and issues in this arena.
