Abstract
Previous studies of the tropical troposphere indicate the presence of a 40 to 50 day oscillation in zonal winds. Spectral analysis of sea surface temperature reveals an increase in variance between 40 and 50 days along the California coast as far south as Santa Barbara (34.4N) and at least as far north as Pt. Arena (39N). Increases in the amplitude of this oscillation at 36N generally coincide with local El Nino warming episodes. It is suggested that the 40 to 50 day oscillation in sea surface temperature off central California may be related to the 40 to 50 day oscillation in the tropical troposphere through atmospheric teleconnections between the tropics and mid-latitudes. A thermal oscillation under a restorative forcing

    Cai, W.J.; Chu, Peter C. (1998);
    The authors report an interdecadal oscillation in a wind- and thermally-driven ocean general circulation model (OGCM). The oscillation is tantalizing in that it occursunder a relatively strong thermal damping(26.3 W ...

    Enhancement of boiling in highly wetting fluids

    Tuite, Joseph M. (Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1999-03);
    The boiling of a highly wetting dielectric fluid, in an oscillating environment, has been investigated. Because of low surface tension, these liquids require very high superheat to initiate nucleate boiling. This high ...

    Analysis of the influence of internal waves of tidal period upon the mixed-layer depth.

    Lambright, Harold R. (Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1964);
    The apparently random oscillation of the mixed-layer depth is investigated and, by the nature of its energy spectrum and its correlation with tidal activity, a determination of the source of some components of this ...
