dc.description.abstractLine-of-sight (LOS) calculation for the Janus combat simulation model is critical to the processes being simulated and impacts the run speed (ratio of game time to real time), since it may be the single most computationally expensive algorithm in simulation. TIlls thesis presents design and implementation of a transputer network with the purpose ofproYiding an efficient LOS calculation in a distributed memory and computing environment. The approach taken was to use a processor fanning method to speed up the LOS calculation. The programs were implemented on a network of 15 transputers using 3L Parallel C++ (version 2.1.1) programming language. A l*meter resolution terrain database of Fort Hunter Liggett, California was used to get more reliable LOS results. Expected gain of our system was 3.873 (.[[5). After timing tests, we found that we could speed up the LOS calculation by a factorof2.581 when comparing the 15 transputer configuration to a conventional processor which is equivalent to a single transputer. The difference between expected gain and our actual gain was found to be the communication overhead in the network of transputers. We stated that further significant improvements can be provided by using our approach with more memory and faster transputers.en_US
