Hamming, Learning to Learn: Experts, 25 May 1995 [video]

Hamming, Richard W. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 1995-05-25)
As remarked in an earlier chapter, as our knowledge grows exponentially we cope with the growth mainly by specialization. It is increasingly true: An expert is one who knows everything about nothing; a generalist knows ...

Hamming, Learning to Learn: Simulation I, 5 May 1995 [video]

Hamming, Richard W. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 1995-05-05)
A major use of computers these days, after writing and text editing, graphics, program compilation, etc. is simulation. More than 9 out of 10 experiments are done on computers these days. I have already mentioned my serious ...

Hamming, Learning to Learn: Simulation II, 9 May 1995 [video]

Hamming, Richard W. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 1995-05-09)
We now take up the question of the reliability of a simulation. I can do no better than quote from the Summer Computer Simulation Conference of 1975, "Computer based simulation is now in wide spread use to analyze system ...

Hamming, Learning to Learn: You and Your Research, 6 June 1995 [video]

Hamming, Richard W. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 1995-06-06)
I have given a talk with this title many times, and it turns out from discussions after the talk I could have just as well have called it "You and Your Engineering Career," or even "You and Your Career." But I left the ...

Hamming, Learning to Learn: You Get What You Measure, 1 June 1995 [video]

Hamming, Richard W. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 1995-06-01)
You may think that the title means if you measure accurately you will get an accurate measurement, and if not then not; it refers to a much more subtle thing - the way you choose to measure things controls to a large extent ...

Hamming, Learning to Learn: How Do We Know What We Know? 2 June 1995 [video]

Hamming, Richard W. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 1995-06-02)
How do we know what we know, if indeed we know it? The precise title of this philosophical subject is epistemology, the science of knowledge.

Hamming, Learning to Learn: Quantum Mechanics, 19 May 1995 [video]

Hamming, Richard W. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 1995-05-19)
Most physicists currently believe they have description of the universe (though they currently admit 90% to 99% of the universe is in the form of "dark matter" of which they know nothing except it has gravitational ...

Hamming, Learning to Learn: Unreliable Data, 26 May 1995 [video]

Hamming, Richard W. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 1995-05-26)
It has been my experience, as well as many others who have looked; data is generally much less accurate than it is advertised to be. This is not a trivial point - we depend on initial data for many decisions, as well as ...

Hamming, Learning to Learn: Creativity, 23 May 1995 [video]

Hamming, Richard W. (Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 1995-05-23)
Creativity, originality, novelty, and such words are regarded as "good things," and we often fail to distinguish between them - indeed we find them hard to define. Surely we do not need three words with exactly the same ...
