Investigation of MEMS bi-material sensors with metamaterial absorbers for THz imaging [video]

Alves, Fabio (2014-06-03)
There has been a continued interest in the terahertz (THz) imaging due to penetration through non-metallic objects and non-ionizing properties. Real-time imaging in this spectral range has been demonstrated using infrared ...

Thermoacoustic Engine - How do these Hofler Tubes Generate Sound? [video]

Denardo, Bruce (Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, 2015-06)
This thermoacoustic engine, also known as a Hofler Tube, has no moving parts. A strong temperature gradient across closely spaced plates in the middle of the tube creates a thermodynamic cycle of oscillating air that ...

One dimension - Freefall of a feather and penny [video]

Denardo, Bruce (Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, 2014-07)
This classic demonstration dramatically shows that all bodies in a gravitational field have the same acceleration in the absence of air resistance. A penny and feather are in a closed acrylic tube with a valve. The tube ...

One dimension - Freefall of a baseball and a piece of paper [video]

Denardo, Bruce (Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, 2014-07)
Here I hold a horizontal piece of paper and a baseball at the same height from the table. I then ask which will strike the table first, if they are simultaneously released from rest. After receiving their responses, I then ...

One Dimension - Constant Velocity and Constant acceleration [video]

Denardo, Bruce (Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, 2014-07)
Using a glider on an air track we can see what constant acceleration in one dimension looks like and what constant velocity looks like. Constant velocity: Use the glider to check that the air track is level. Two independent ...

Imaging Sound with Flames - The Resonant Flame Tube [video]

Larraza, Andres (Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, 2015-06)
The Resonant Flame Tube is a fun physics demonstration. The tube is filled with propane and then lit on fire.

Helmholtz Resonator - Think you know how helmholtz resonators work? [video]

Larraza, Andres (Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, 2015-05)
Helmholtz Resonator - Here's a gentle physics lesson on helmholtz resonators, complete with multiple demonstrations. Dr. Andres Larraza of the naval postgraduate school demonstrates various helholtz resonators to the 2015 ...
