The Role of Military Expenditures in the African Economic Crisis

The period 1970-1982 in Africa was marked by poor economic perfonnance, and also by accelerated military expenditures. In seeking to detennine whether these two phenomena were linked, this analysis finds that although generalizations concerning the Third World in this regard are futile, for many African countries the defense build-up of the 1970s and early '80s was a major factor in their economic demise.
