This paper attempts to examine the relationship between defence spending and budgetary allocation in twelve Middle Eastern and North African/Mediterranean countries. The impact of increases in defence spending on the budget deficit is analysed to find if there is any trade-off between spending on defence and other spending categories. The paper also tests if budgetary patterns involving defence vary by country group.en_US
