Abstract
Due to the vanishing Coriolis parameter in the equatorial region, it is possible for a vortex of given pressure distribution to rotate in either direction. On the other hand, a vortex originating on one side of the equator with a direction of rotation dictated by the sign of the Coriolis parameter, if displaced to the other side of the equator, may maintain its original direction of rotation for a period of time as long as it is not displaced too far away from the equator.

    Typhoon Vamei: An equatorial tropical cyclone formation

    Chang, C.-P.; Liu, C.H.; Kuo, H.C. (2003);
    Due to the diminishing Coriolis effect, the belt 300 km either side of the equator has been considered tropical cyclone-free. Typhoon Vamei, which developed near Singapore on 27 December 2001, was the first recorded ...

    Chang, C.-P.; Wong, T. S. (2008);
    The formation of Typhoon Vamei on 27 December 2001 in the southern South China Sea was the first-observed tropical cyclogenesis within 1.5 degrees of the equator. This rare event was first detected by observations of typhoon ...
