Abstract
The recent emergence of two separate outbreaks of two new viruses has generated renewed interest in the threat of pandemics. For a significant portion of the total fatalities associated with these infections the cause
of death was due to an over-reaction of an infected body’s immune system. This research explores possible pharmaceutical interventions that would help expand the list of options public health could employ in a response. For inclusion in state stockpiles, medications must meet three specific criteria: medical efficacy, cost, and logistical considerations. We identified four medications that could be employed (three statins - atorvastatin, simvastatin, and gemfibrozil and an antiviral – ribavirin) and present options for their inclusion into state stockpiles. Through this research we have attempted to open a dialogue with other federal and state planners as they wrestle with the same challenges within their home agencies.
