Abstract
Japan is a critical player in the context of U.S.-China strategic stability; however, there are very few discussions between Chinese and Japanese security experts on the issue, much less trilateral discussions involving all three countries. Moreover, there has been little scholarly attention to the role Japan plays in the U.S.-China relationship. This project aims to investigate challenges to strategic stability between China and the United States that derive from the triangular relationship between these two powers and Japan through the medium of a trilateral U.S.- China-Japan Track 2 dialogue to promote mutual understanding among experts from the three countries on the concept and definition of U.S.-China strategic stability, the purposes that U.S.-China strategic stability serves, and approaches to fostering strategic stability in the region.
