The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has been involved in distance education and learning since the mid 1950's. In the mid-90's, distance education programs exploded across the campus largely due to an expanding customer based fueled by the information technology revolution. From a strategic planning perspective, a big question for NPS was whether the traditional model for developing, managing and evaluating resident programs needed to change for distance education programs. Distance learning instructional modalities vary and the needs of distance education faculty and students may vary as well. In a recent accounting, NPS had a total student enrollment of 2,420 students. Of those students, 1,028 were non-resident. Of the non-resident students, about 77 % (792) are pursuing a degree. Considering student enrollment in all distance education programs at NPS, about 58 % are DoD civilians, while 42 % are military. In particular, in the last ten years, NPS has experienced asymptotic growth in its distance education programs. This has been especially noted in the area of systems engineering.
