dc.description.abstractImproving Conventional Weapon safety and lethality is important to the US military. Dr. Joe Hooper, is a physicist at the Naval Postgraduate School who specializes in explosives and the mechanics of high-strain rate materials. He and his team have been focused on the fundamental physics of various materials to see if they can improve conventional weapons. Main research motivations: 1. How can they improve energy release of various reactive materials 2. How can they improve the safety of conventional weapons using novel materials. Dr. Hooper makes use of two labs for all his research. 1. Gas Gun Lab - A laboratory containing a helium powdered 3-inch gas gone capable of accelerating a 3-inch slug up to 700 meters per second. This lab is used to test high-velocity impact and shockwave loading on materials. 2. Split hopkinson pressure bar lab - Used for testing materials under very rapid compression which yields results similar in time scales to an exploding warheaden_US
