ARSENL: Advancing Swarm UAV Capabilities through Collaborative Field Experimentation [video]

Low-cost swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming increasingly relevant in the current operational environment. Field experimentation and demonstration events accelerate swarm concept development and swarm tactics. This presentation highlights the recent research activities and collaborative efforts by the NPS Advanced Robotic Systems Engineering Laboratory (ARSENL) in support of the Aerial Combat Swarms initiative for the swarm versus swarm UAVs scenario. In April, ARSENL teamed with DARPA, Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), and the three service academies for the Service Academy Swarm Challenge. The challenge demonstrated air-to-air and air-to-ground swarm tactics using heterogeneous swarms comprised of up to 25 fixed-wing or quadrotor UAVs. During two Marine Corps Integrated Training Exercises in October and February (ITX 18-1 and 18-2), ARSENL demonstrated a new behavior architecture and three new swarm behaviors while supporting Red Team operations. Additionally, two new hardware platforms are currently in development to better satisfy the logistic needs of the operation user.
