This investigation is an experimental study of the stress distribution in two circular cylinders intersecting at right angles and acted on by internal pressure. Two specimens of the thick-wall category were tested to rupture and a strain gage analysis was made of critical points. the specification of the specimens tested were so chosen that this investigation would be the logical beginning of an overall study of interesting cylinders under the influence of internal pressure. The results of the tests are insufficient to indicate trends or establish facts as conclusive. The conclusions reached as a result of this investigation are, therefore, of such a nature as to require confirmation by subsequent continuation of this study. these conclusions are: 1) the maximum stresses present In specimens of the type tested are in the plane of intersection and tangent to the ellipse of intersection at a point approximately fifteen degrees from the crotch, 2)additional resistance to the high stresses at the plane of intersection is necessary over that required in the wall of a straight pipe, 3) bending associated with the stressing of this type of intersection by the application of internal pressure is of minor importance in specimens in the thick wall range.
