    History of the Hotel Del Monte's Arizona Garden

    In 1878-1879, Railroad magnate Charles Crocker had been impressed by the workmanship of German-born master gardener and landscape designer Rudolph Ulrich, who had constructed extremely formal and elaborate gardens for several great estates in the San Francisco bay area. Crocker hired Ulrich to design and oversee the installation of the grounds and gardens of the Hotel Del Monte, with a goal of creating the same sort of garden design guests would find at a great hotel in Europe, but, where appropriate, incorporating exotic American plants with traditional favorites.

    Naval Support Activity (NSA) Monterey located in Monterey, California hosts a diverse arrangement of Navy and Department of Defense (DoD) activities and personnel, as well as a complex variety of cultural resources. The base is home to over 15 tenant commands including the Naval Research Lab Monterey (NRL) which conducts scientific research and weather modeling, Fleet Numerical Meteorological and Oceanographic Center (FNMOC) which provides 24/7 worldwide meteorology data and support to U.S. and coalition forces, and the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). NPS is the largest producer of advanced degrees for DoD and proudly graduates about 1,500 students annually from all U.S. military services and international students from over 50 countries.

    Welcome to the Quarters on the grounds of the Naval Post­graduate School. Though these lovely houses are the homes of Navy families, during 1925-1943 they were part of the magnifi­cent resort - Hotel Del Monte . At that time they were referred to as cottages. Some were used by guests of the hotel and others served as residences for the hotel staff.
